Llyn yr Fan Fawr is a lake in the Brecon Beacons. It is set quite high up on the hillside underneath the mountain of Fan Brecheiniog which was incidentally the first Mountain I ever climbed! It's not advisable to swim in the lake for a number of reasons... Firstly it's full of pond weed so you could get tangled up. Secondly it's freezing cold up there and lastly it's got a good variety of leeches swimming about ready to suck your blood. So just don't do it! The river coming out of it however is fine for a quick dip.
The stream joins onto the river Tawe which runs down towards Swansea. Turning left shortly after Dan-yr-Ogof caves will take you towards Trecastle. Half way up that road are a few spots where the road gets quite close to the stream. This is a popular place especially if it's sunny as you can park your car very close and walk down to the water. We stopped off here for a picnic the other day and enjoyed ourselves, I built a dam in the river to create us a small paddling pool which was pretty chilly but you got used to it after a while!
